Hear This: The Wombats - Bee Sting

The huge success of Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life saw The Wombats experiment with lots of different genres; including psychedelic-led tracks ‘Lethal Combination’ and ‘Dip You In Honey’, and the funky ‘Out of My Head’. Their comeback single, ‘Bee Sting’, again channels the Wombats’ take on
psychedelica (even on its artwork cover); with their obvious gestures to both the 90s and to the early Dandy Warhols.
‘Bee Sting’ features lyrics about feeling out of place, its chorus “You drive me crazier that a wingless bee / You drive me crazier than I want to be / Put your best dress on, better make it black / I'm going out but I'm not coming back / I'm not coming back”. In Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life, the theme of adulthood and uncertainty is often explored, perhaps as this is a point that the band are at in their personal lives.
The song is driven by its synth-soaked, reinforced acoustic strums, distorted electric guitar riffs and a heavy beat that commands attention. Though different from their more typical style, Murphy’s voice turns anything it touches into an indie-rock anthem; adding to a calibre of festival, show and stadium-ready performances for their upcoming tour.
