Talking about relationships is nothing new to rising star H.E.R. However, this track from her new EP I Used To Know Her: The Prelude reveals a darker side of her personality; regretful and tortured.

The previously elusive Gabi Wilson aka H.E.R. has returned with six-track track EP, preparing her fans for a new album. The track ‘Against Me’ is depressed and tragic, focusing on the artist’s regrets in her relationship with her man.

The beat is minimalist and offers little to nothing, in fact, you might say it feels almost lethargic, like something ripped from Drake’s Take Care album. However, the dramatic effect this creates is that it channels all the listener’s attention to H.E.R.’s lyrics, which are sorrowful and laced with pain.

H.E.R talks about how she should have trusted her gut feeling when her significant other made mistakes and should have left him; instead, she chose to give him a chance and stayed by his side, as a result of which she has suffered. The song climaxes in a long spoken word piece, where H.E.R. articulates her struggles with men and the troublesome male psyche, encouraging fellow women to trust their intuition. It's truly a song full of food for thought.
