For music lovers more concerned with purchasing and listening to physical editions, the best day of shopping is upcoming with Record Store Day back for 2018. Saturday 21st April will see hundreds of record labels unveil exclusive releases on vinyl, cassette and more, to ultimately support and celebrate independent record stores in the UK. This year, over 240 shops will participate, making it the biggest involvement yet. With the announcement of this year’s list being divisive as ever, with an exhaustive list of over 500, here are 10 of the best records to track down. Prince - 1999 (one-disc edition) RSD say: “Reissue of the seven-track LP version of Prince’s critically acclaimed, breakthrough album 1999. Featuring the original alternative front cover and ‘eye’ picture labels. This version of 1999, featuring the original alternative front cover and ‘eye’ picture labels, has been unavailable on LP for 35 years since its initial pressing in 1983.” Why it’s great: Since his heartbreaking death in April 2016, reissues of a significant part of Prince’s 39 album back catalogue (Purple Rain, Sign O’ The Times, Controversy etc) have become largely available. With 1999 being pressed in a way never seen, this classic album is another reason to rekindle a love for The Purple One. Arcade Fire - Arcade Fire EP RSD say: “First time on vinyl for this 12 inch transparent blue coloured & individually numbered EP, with augmented gold artwork. Originally released in 2003 as a CD demo only available at live dates.” Why it’s great: With this self-released EP having such limited availability, this accessible addition shows the band before truly working out their sound – a countless addition to any fan. David Bowie - Let’s Dance (Full-Length Demo) RSD say: “This black vinyl 45 rpm 12” single features the first appearance of the full-length demo of ‘Let’s Dance’, previously released in an edited form through digital download and streaming services for David’s birthday on 8th January this year. The full-length version clocks in at 7.34, compared the edit which is 5.19 in length.” Why it’s great: Alongside two other rare and unreleased David Bowie albums set for RSD 2018, this vinyl debut for the classic single is too iconic to go amiss. AC/DC - Back In Black (cassette album) RSD say: ‘Back in Black is the first AC/DC album with frontman Brian Johnson and the second best-selling album of all time! Now you can hear it the same way it was released in 1980: on cassette, suitable for your boom box or the tape deck in your car!’ Why it’s great: As one of the most iconic albums of all time, containing the singles ‘You Shook Me All Night Long’ as well as the titled ‘Back and Black’, the cassette format adds a degree of nostalgia to any rock lover’s collection.
