The Ultimate University Soundtrack

One of the biggest shocks to the system when you get to University is just how different people's music tastes are - and just how much yours will change.

Under the influence of flatmates, dodgy DJ's and endless Spotify suggestions, your music collection will grow and expand into areas you never thought possible.

University is never a universal experience. Whether you’ve loved every minute or quit after the first semester, there are always a handful of tracks that will take you back to that very first week in your murky student accommodation room.

From the good times to the bad, here are the songs that should be on your ultimate university playlist.

The soundtrack to your… Night Out

Pre-Drinks
Jammin' – Bob Marley

Dependent on your social circle, your pre-drink playlist will vary. While many will agree keeping things up-beat and contemporary is essential, this is well worth an add to your playlist. Not only is this perfect for a chilled out, stress-free vibe, it also doubles up as one of the most effective drinking games going. Simply take a drink every time you hear the word ‘jam’ and you’ll probably end up too pissed to actually make it out.

The Anthem
Shots – LMFAO ft. Lil John

You know the score. Nothing brings a group of strangers together like a group chant encouraging someone else to drink. There’s bound to be someone at the bar getting the not-quite-sourz shots in, so drink up and enjoy. However, know that if you ever hear it sober, you will be haunted with regret of the events that followed your inevitable shot (or 6).

End of the Night
Toto – Africa

You’d be forgiven for not being familiar with Toto prior to university (Africa, the continent? Not so much). But at sometime during your freshers, probably towards the end of the night in a dingy club, you’ll hear what can only be described as magic. You’ll spend a few months wailing along, pretending you know the words, but you’ll get there eventually.

The soundtrack to your… Living Situation

The flat mate with the speakers
Darlin’ – Tom Zanetti

Every flat or house has one; an absolute loon who has an obnoxious subwoofer on their speaker and inflicts it on the rest of you. You spend a year going mad at the bass going through the walls and there’s always one song (that sounds just like the rest) that they love to play on repeat. If you don’t have one, then it’s probably you. Tom Zanneti’s 'Darlin’' was my housemate’s particular poison, so if I had to suffer, so do you. I didn’t actually realise it had words until I listened to it whilst writing this, but it makes a nice alternative to 'You Want Me'.

The 10/10 flat mate
Oops!... I did it again – Britney Spears

You were warned against it, you knew you shouldn’t and yet you still did. Perhaps it was a lapse in judgment, or just one too many £1 jager bombs, either way, you’re in a bit of a pickle. Hate to break it to you, but just like Britney, you’ll do it again… Oops.

The Soundtrack To Your… Development As A Human Being

Your Birthday
Not Nineteen Forever – The Courteeners

University is a pivotal time for most of those who attend. It's where you typically become who you're ‘meant to be’ - but it does also mean saying goodbye to your reckless youth. 'Not Nineteen Forever' is the perfect goodbye to those wasted days and irresponsible attitudes.

Pro Tip: Play on your 19th birthday to feel like the star of an edgy coming-of-age film. Play on your 20th birthday if you want to cry like a baby.

Homesickness
Castle on the Hill – Ed Sheeran

While Ed Sheeran has developed a marmite-esque taste, no matter how many times it’s played, 'Castle on the Hill' will always take the country kids back home.

Crappy pubs and a ‘nothing-to-do’ attitude will have been your life before moving to a big city, so it’s only right to give it a listen when you miss the ‘roaring fields’. Chances are, if it comes on midway through a night out (because Uni DJ’s are wild and don’t care about a time or a place), you’ll be able to spot your fellow country souls from a far – hands up, shout-singing and crying.

When It All Just Gets Too Much
Same Jeans – The View

We’ve all been there. You haven’t done your washing in about two weeks and you’re not sure sanity is something you possess anymore. If you don’t leave your flat soon, you’ll go stir-crazy, so you do the only thing you know how to anymore; get pissed. A lyrical match and a musical representation of your mindset, 'Same Jeans' could just become your unofficial anthem.

The Soundtrack To Your… Academic Career

Last Minute Cram Session
Gotta Get Thru This – Daniel Bedingfield

Does what it says on the tin, doesn’t it? From cramming for a noteless presentation to your final exam, the up-tempo beat and motivational lyrics work perfectly to give you tunnel vision for acing it.

Bedingfield also wrote & recorded this in his bedroom, so even if you do fail miserably, you can always use it as inspo to become the next homemade singing sensation.

Exam Freedom
Touch The Sky – Kanye West ft. Lupe Fiasco

You’re done, you can breathe & 'Touch The Sky' is the perfect song to celebrate to. Effortlessly breezy, it’s hard to not exude the same confidence Kanye has when you listen to it. You’ll be feeling sky-high and why shouldn’t you? You’ve done the hard work; you know you nailed that question on insoluble dietary fibers and you’re sure as hell gonna celebrate. Enjoy it – you deserve it.
