New Years is a time for reflection, celebration, self-improvement and most importantly, the mother of all hangovers.

As we say goodbye to 2017, it's probably safe to say now it has been one crazy year, and not just in the music world. The period between Christmas and New Years is exactly the time we need to sit back and reflect on the past 365 days. Everyone decides to spend these few days their own way, fully knowing the days don't count because no-one really knows what day it is anyway. Whether it's finishing off the left-over Christmas grub, earning back the money spent on presents and booze, or frantically catching up on January exam revision, it's all the calm before the New Years storm. I spent mine bringing together a short, but sweet, playlist of great tunes that deserve a spot on your New Years playlist.

Scroll to the end of the article to see our six-hour long complete sing-a-long playlist to see you into 2018.

Paper Planes – M.I.A

It may remind you of that time you visited the club that everyone told you to stay clear of, but ‘Paper Planes’ really is the song you hate to love. The first few bars will be met with a few mild groans, but it won’t be long before everyone is up on their feet, shooting gun fingers in the air without a care in the world. Even your one mate who now goes to university in Bristol and drinks craft ales will be belting out the words to this generic, but classic, New Year’s necessity.

New Rules – Dua Lipa

The New Year marks the turning of a new page for many people, and there’s no better way to enter 2018 than with Dua Lipa’s empowering pop belter. It’s time to leave all those shitty relationships in 2017.

Young Dumb & Broke – Khalid

Khalid is easily one of the most exciting young artists around right now and his debut album indicates better things for the future. ‘Young Dumb & Broke’ brings an aura of adolescent innocence, combined with its uplifting undertones and infectious synth-hooks, it’s a perfect addition to any New Year’s playlist.

Chunky – Format:B

I mean the lyrics are literally, “Keep it fun until the break of dawn”. If your New Years party is going on until the sun rises then this is the one for you.

A-Punk – Vampire Weekend

This is the one song that literally no-one actually knows the lyrics to, but that won’t stop them giving it a good go, belting out any random words along to the catchy tune. Despite this, the iconic riff and pacey drum hooks are sure to raise the energy.

Techno Fan – The Wombats

There’s something so heart-warmingly uplifting about The Wombats, possibly due to how their stories of hopeless romanticism, heartbreaks and adolescence carry an air of relatability. This catchy track’s jangly hooks and huge chorus are perfect for reflecting on 2017 to.

Praise You – Fatboy Slim

Since Fatboy Slim first delivered sweet music to our ears back in the 90s, he’s released banger after banger, and ‘Praise You’ is no exception. As one of the more well-known tracks from his back catalogue, the funky drops and easily recallable lyrics will go down a treat.

HUMBLE. – Kendrick Lamar

Taken from one of the albums of the year, ‘Humble’ offers aggressive beats and pulsating bars, as Kendrick Lamar raps of journey from rags to riches. This track offers something a little bit more in your face than the other numbers on the playlist.

P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) – John Gibbons

Any playlist involving the word ‘ultimate’ would fall short without the inclusion of Michael Jackson, but in order to ramp up the atmosphere another peg, stick on John Gibbon’s club remix of this infectious number.

Come On Eileen – Dexy’s Midnight Runners

One of the few songs that can defy all genre preferences. We’ve all been there, stuck at a party or pre-drinks with all different music tastes kicking about. One minute it’s garage, the next it’s ‘Shout Out To My Ex’, followed by some seven-minute long techno mix that no-one’s feeling. The only solution is of course, ‘Come On Eileen’. This is the most appropriate song to bring everyone together, shouting out the lyrics at the top of their voices.

Viento – Gianluca Vacchi

You’ve probably all seen Gianluca Vacchi living his best life on Instagram. You know, the silver-haired millionaire covered in tattoos who’s partying on a private yacht one day, then riding horses with Zac Efron the next? Well, the slick 50-year-old kicked off his DJing career in style this year by dropping ‘Viento’. The pulsating drops and tropical vibes are sure to keep the party going.

Africa – Toto

‘Africa’ by Toto hardly needs an introduction, once those first few bars of distinct percussion drop everyone knows the dancefloor is the place to be. The track has experienced something of a revival in 2017, so there’s literally no better song to finish the year on. It’s time to grab the nearest person to you and have a completely over-the-top singalong.
