Some songs have a capability. A capability that if they catch you just at the right time in your life that they’ll knock the breath out of you and leave you bewitched on the floor, mesmerised by the thoughts that your own mind conjured. Tom Adams’ latest release ‘Seven Birds’ has that very strength. Lifted from the Berlin composer-producer-musician’s forthcoming EP Voyages by Starlight, the track is introduced as a familiar, recurring dream. Minimal keys guide a lit path to natural, stormy moments that soundtrack your restless sleep whilst dreamy vocals stand at the forefront, flowing a serenading lullaby ‘I’ll see you soon’. Thick with immense emotions, a blend of electronic and acoustic instruments seem distantly intimate. Spotted with sonic synths, piano picks up pace with dazzling rhythm. Their embrace ignites a glimmering centrepiece where shattering falsetto yearns across a cinematic scope. Adams’ stunning high vocals glide with ease across a melancholic sky. Steadily coming to an end, the embrace is released, leaving a quiet reflection of the calm after the storm. The first to be heard from Voyages by Starlight, Adams’s debut release with Kowloon Records, is equal in measures. Intense and delicate, strong and tired, loud and quiet. Done, impeccably.
