Twenty-year-old pop enigma Melanie Martinez, is proving much more than a simply an ex-contestant on The Voice on the latest cut, ‘Sippy Cup’ from her upcoming debut album.

Melanie MartinezThe 'Carousel' singer premiered the sounds and visuals for 'Sippy Cup' via SPIN Magazine on 30th July, marking the reveal of another ‘great’ track off her impending concept album and first major LP release following 2014’s Dollhouse EP

Written and directed by Martinez herself, the track ‘Sippy Cup’ and its accompanying video stylistically follow suit of the prior electro-pop tracks ‘Pity Party and ‘Soap’, particularly in their blending of bubblegum aesthetics and dark lyrical content. Martinez truly displays an impressive level of control as she conveys a highly crafted concept for her debut album: the euphoria of childhood mixed with the nightmarish reality of adulthood.

With the release of earlier tracks, Martinez told the story of the impending album’s eponymous character, Crybaby. ‘Sippy Cup’ is no exception to this pattern: ‘The song is basically the bridge between the Dollhouse EP and the Cry Baby album. This song is about what actually “goes down in the kitchen,” a deeper look into Crybaby’s family life’ Martinez explained to SPIN.

This haunting electronic track disrupts the tranquillity and perfection presented by conventional pop music. ‘Kids are still depressed when you dress them up, and syrup is still syrup in a sippy cup’, Martinez sings with her dreamy, soft voice as she explores the darker roots of artistic expression, the forgotten skeletons hidden in the closet.

With such a strong artistic concept to play with, Martinez is one to watch as she changes what it means to be a pop artist with the telling of Crybaby’s narrative.
