New Band of The Day: Raving Wild

With a name like Raving Wild, you’d be forgiven for expecting today’s New Band of The Day to be taken from the Friendly Fires school of dance music. But singer-songwriter Graham Iddon takes a much less frenetic approach to songwriting, crafting a sound that is delicate yet powerful, embedding subtle instrumental intricacies within hook-heavy ballads. This approach is most evident on 'Made of Gold', a sparse, melancholic track that draws heavily on the blues inflected folk sound made popular by Ben Howard. A restrained, pulsating riff drives the track along, complimenting Iddon’s gruff, weary vocals and contributing to the thinly veiled desperation the lyrics convey. Iddon’s latest and most exciting offering is 'Winterheart', a vocal led track that shines in its simplicity. A calm, understated, melody meanders throughout the song, augmenting the fragile vocal hooks and granting the track a rustic charm. While this economic approach to songwriting isn’t anything new, it is by no means formulaic, with much of the tracks appeal lying in its authenticity. A promising start to 2014 has seen Iddon cultivate a radio friendly sound that is beginning to turn heads, with Raving Wild quickly blossoming into a real prospect for the future.
