Heads Up - New Music - Stateless

The story of Stateless is one of a ‘nearly’ band – by rights they should be huge.

After their first demo was playlisted by Radio 1 they were signed to Sony, but unceremoniously dropped with the labels merger with BMG. Critical acclaim, a debut album on respected Berlin label !K7 and singer-songwriter Chris James guesting on an album by one DJ Shadow still didn’t bring the band the success their music deserved.

Astounding new record Matlida should change that. An album of contradictions it fuses organic, classic song-writing and musicianship with the best future electronic music has to offer – described by some as Jeff Buckley battling Modeselektor with a twist of Timbaland.

Single ‘Ariel’ was an astonishing precursor for the album, it finding James laying out the melody over West African guitar lines, crunching snare snaps and thunderous kicks, dubstep sub-bass splatters and glitchtronic interference. It’s an utterly compelling combination, classic song-writing rendered completely new. If anything can claim to be both classic and future pop music it is the music of Stateless.

In the live arena their near flawless recreation of the multi-layered wonderment on their recorded material leaves audiences in awe – as recently witnessed by TNS at London’s Relentless Garage. Stateless are a band for you to look out for.
