Because let’s not pretend it isn’t true – if you’re a cash-strapped student who happens to also be loved up, Valentine’s Day is likely to be centered on a box of chocolates, a bottle of wine and a night in with a romantic DVD.

If you’re lucky, though, maybe you’ll get a gift thrown in... jewellery, anyone?

Take note, boyfriends of the nation.

For the jewellery lover...

Celeb jewellery favourite Shimla is a brand that has adorned the wrists of Pixie Lott and Jameela Jamil. The company is pulling out all the stops this Valentine’s Day, with products including Shamballa style bracelets made from fireball crystals, semi-precious stones and woven, friendship-like bracelets.

Prices range from £18 to £120 – so there is a little piece of India to suit everyone’s Valentine’s Day budget.

If you feel like expressing your love through earrings (you probably should, FYI) you could look to the Valentine’s offerings from the Je t’aime Collection. With all products under £30, these quirky jewellery creations are both romantic and economical – could we ask for anything more?

Inspired by the eternal symbol of love, these cute coloured crystal earrings come in a variety of different colours in addition to the traditional red and pink. Why not try a hot seasonal colour like yellow or bright blue to be a little different? £29 each.

Alternatively, go for classic chic with the white or red dangly and studs from the Orion collection – the perfect finishing touch that’s good for day or night. From £11 for studs and £19 for danglies.

Alternatively, Tresor Paris’s Valentine’s Day token of affection is this ‘L’ pendant – find your nearest store here

For the tech fan...

This Valentine’s Day, KAKKOii are selling quirky and fun wireless speakers that connect to any Bluetooth enabled device in mere seconds – enabling you to fire up your speaker anywhere.  They come in a range of colours including red and pink, giving them that Valentine’s Day feel. Buy yours here

For the homebod...

Drawing on multiple themes – pop culture, retro, nostalgia – the POP phone by Native Union is already stocked in Liberty's, Harrods and Selfridges. The clever product allows you to plug in your iPad, phone or computer and chat away as if you’re in a 90s movie – perfect too if you’re spending Valentine’s Day holed up at uni, miles away from the other half.

There are also exclusive colours for Valentine’s Day, including ‘Nail Varnish’ and ‘Pastel Pink’. We’ve ordered the ‘Mojito’ (pictured).
