Singer Selena Gomez has revealed that she underwent a kidney transplant in secret over the summer. The 25-year-old, who suffers from Lupus, explained on her Instagram that the disease was the reason that she needed the transplant, which subsequently caused her absence from the music industry and the lack of promotion of her new singles over the summer months. She stated, “It was what I needed to do for my overall health.” In a recent Instagram post, the singer shared images of her post-surgery scar and herself in hospital next to her friend, Francia Raisa, who donated the kidney to Gomez. Gomez publically thanked her friend by saying, "There aren't words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. "She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis." Gomez had previously taken time away from social media last year due to anxiety and depression, which the popstar stated were a side effect of the lupus diagnosis. Lupus is an autoimmune disease (affecting the body’s immune system), which can cause a range of symptoms including extreme tiredness, joint pain and swelling and rashes. Not a lot is known about the disease, with Gomez herself stating that, “Lupus continues to be very misunderstood but progress is being made.”
