Warburtons have revealed the nation’s favourite sandwich, and no, it’s not BLT.
2000 people were surveyed in a study conducted by SWNS, to commemorate the launch of the new Warburtons Mighty White Loaf.

It turns out that the love for a certain type of sandwich filling is generational, and while the ham salad was all the rage in the 1970s, it quickly got replaced by the chicken salad during the fitness-crazy 1980s.
Come the 1990s and, of course there was a classic born there (like pretty much everything else in the nineties). The almighty BLT combination, which was really never out of fashion, had its fan peak in the 1990s.
The news century came in classier… or fishier, depending how you look at it. Salmon and cream cheese joined the market and took it by storm. We suppose the only reason the popularity of this sandwich filling went down, is because people just discovered it’s SO MUCH BETTER on a bagel.
The rise in plant-based lifestyle and diet has had its fair impact on the sandwich industry, as hummus and falafel filling have come out on top for the last ten years. What is not to love?
In fact, people love sandwiches so much, that more than a third of the population would describe sandwiches as one of their favourite meals. Joey from “Friends” was not alone, after all.
The love-making act of creating the perfect sandwich, however is surprisingly short- it takes on average four and a half minutes for us to prepare the treat.
Darren Littler, innovation director at Warburtons, says: “Whilst the humble sandwich has remained a classic UK favourite over the decades, it’s interesting to see the fillings that fall in and out of favour in line with trends and preferences
Now, with a vastly increased number of choices compared to years gone by, more adventurous fillings are now clearly the order of the day for many Brits, with corned beef no longer cutting the mustard.”
Are you a traditional filling kind of person, or a bit of a wild child, when it comes to sandwiches? Or maybe it just depends on the mood.
