Hungry? 10 toastie recipes from around the world

Ahh, the humble toastie. Childhood snack food, lazy teenage dinner staple... and saver of student wallets and stomachs since 1974.

You could even say that the toastie is the greatest invention since sliced bread. You wouldn’t be far wrong.

Our particular favourite is cheese (literally any cheese will do) with BBQ sauce, but we’re also partial to a good croque-monsieur. Or, you know, cheese and ham.

The toastie is turning 40this year, and we’re celebrating the birth of the mother of all carb-based treats by taking you on a grilled bread and melted cheese tour of the world via the lovely people at Breville, who have tracked down some of the top toastie recipes from Planet Earth. 

Did you know, for example, that students in the Netherlands are probably chowing down on that classic toastie recipe of Bitterballen and Pindasaus, right now?

No, we don't know what that means either.
