Red Joan is directed by Trevor Nunn and based on Jennie Rooney’s best-selling novel of the same name. The trailer begins by setting up the story in the year 2000. There we see Joan Stanley (Judi Dench) enjoying her retirement, living a content and quiet suburban life.

Her quiet existence is suddenly disrupted when a knock on the door turns out to be M16. She is then arrested and accused of providing intelligence to Communist Russia.

While her adult son (Ben Miles) works to try and convince the authorities that they have the wrong woman, the trailer gives us a look into Joan’s past at Cambridge University.

Back in 1938, we are allowed glimpses of Joan as a young physics student (Sophie Cookson), falling for known campus communist Leo Galich (Tom Hughes), who begins to open her eyes and cause her to see the world in a new way. While still at Cambridge during WWII, Joan is employed by a top secret nuclear testing facility - and comes to understand the real world implications and effects that their work will have on the world outside their facility.

Confronted with the impossible question, what price are you willing to pay for peace? Joan must make the impossible choice to either betray her country or save it.

Red Joan is due to be released in cinemas on 19th April 2019.
