First we had the 1942 Disney adaptation, an undisputed classic, then we had the 1994 live adaptation, which many probably can’t even remember. Fast forward almost ten years and Jon Favreau took his turn, with his 2016 live action remake, and now we have Mowgli, Andy Serkis’ take on Rudyard Kipling’s classic story.

It appears that since The Jungle Book is a story that consistently pulls in money at the box office, Hollywood will continue adapting it in one way or another until the world finally says ‘enough.'

But for now I suppose all we can do is enjoy what Hollywood continues to throw at us and this year, that’s Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle.

I have to hand it to Serkis; from the trailer this film looks stunning. The CGI animals, the visuals of the jungle and the dazzling cinematography all combine to make what looks to be a cinematic masterpiece.

Serkis looks to be striking a perfect balance between raw emotion and gentle humour here in a story that seems to be focusing more on Mowgli’s individual struggle between man and wolf, as opposed to the wider dynamics of the jungle, It’s an interesting take on Kipling’s works and it will be interesting to see how it turns out.

The iconic animals of the jungle are voiced by a collection of Hollywood A-listers including Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Naomie Harris and Benedict Cumberpatch, in an unsurprising but still exciting turn as the villainous Shere Khan. Frieda Pinto and Matthew Rhys round out the cast as the human characters of the film. The cast is impressive and from the trailer they all look to be on fine form.

Although another Jungle Book adaptation is not the most original of choices, if the trailer is anything to go by, Serkis appears to have done a phenomenal job with his retelling of the iconic story. I’d be lying if I said the trailer didn’t give me goosebumps.

Mowgli will be released on Netflix on December 7th.
