Rumours of a feature film, based on the series that took the world by storm, have been swirling since the series came to an end in 2013. Finally, it has been announced that the film is indeed happening and to everyone’s excitement, Aaron Paul is set to reprise his role as Walter White’s quick-witted sidekick, Jesse Pinkman.

The film is said to be a standalone installment in the Breaking Bad universe, and will follow on from the events of the series finale, which I won’t go into for the sake of those who have not yet found the time to watch the show .

Vince Gilligan, creator, writer and director of the TV series, which is widely considered to be one of the greatest TV shows of all time, is set to write and produce the film but it is unclear at the moment as to whether he will return to direct as well. Gilligan has an existing agreement with Sony TV so there is speculation that the film will be released as a TV movie but this has not been confirmed as of yet.

The only indication we have so far with regards to plot comes from the cryptic logline that has been released, stating that the film will look at, ‘the escape of a kidnapped man and his quest for freedom.’ Will Jesse be the kidnapped man? Or will the film stray away from the series and bring new characters into the story? With little else to go on, for now, we can only speculate.

The reaction to the news of the film so far has been mixed. Some have argued is merely an attempt to piggyback off the series’ success and others have cynically stated it would inevitably be a failed attempt to replicate the winning formula of the show, which the medium of film could not possibly hope to capture. Others are excited at the prospect of returning to the universe which had us on the edge of our seats throughout its six season run.

Let’s hope that the Breaking Bad movie will not be yet another one of Hollywood's disappointing attempts to turn a TV show into a feature film. Let's not think about what happened to Baywatch. However, with the award winning team behind the series at the helm Breaking Bad: The Movie has every chance to exceed expectations.

The film is set to start shooting under the working title Greenbriar and filming will begin later this month in New Mexico and continue through early 2019.
