The second trailer for the upcoming drama film starring Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe and Lucas Hedges, Boy Erased has dropped, and by the looks of it this film will have us all weeping into our popcorn. The film tells the story of Jared Eamons a teenage boy (played by Lucas Hedges) who is outed to his Baptist parents (Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe) and subsequently sent to the controversial gay conversion therapy led by therapist Victor Sykes (Joel Edgerton). From the trailer the film looks challenging, emotional, and powerful as issues of religion, sexuality and self-acceptance collide in a moving narrative that is sure to sweep the board when the awards season nominations come in later in the year. The film is based on the real life story of Garrard Conley who detailed his experience with gay conversion therapy in his 2016 memoir of the same name. Joel Edgerton has written and directed the film and stars as the head therapist of the conversion therapy program Eamons is forced to enter into. With turns in last year's awards season favourites Ladybird (2017) and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) Lucas Hedges relatively new career is going from strength to strength and he is shaping up to be a Hollywood superstar in the making. With an Oscar nomination already under his belt for Manchester by the Sea (2016) he is sure to receive another for his work here, which looks quite frankly magnificent just from the trailer. Kidman and Crowe also look on fine form as the devout parents battling their religious beliefs with their love for their son. It is a complicated dynamic but one that Edgerton looks to be handling tactfully and masterfully. If the trailer is anything to go by the film is sure to be both moving and heart breaking in equal measure. Boy Erased is set to be released November 2nd.
