When a reboot/sequel of the beloved classic Mary Poppins (1964) was announced in 2015 the world shuddered at the thought of Hollywood debasing yet another iconic movie with a tacky and uninspired sequel.

However, with musical film veteran Rob Marshall, who brought us classics like Chicago (2004) and Annie (1999), at the helm its safe to say it’s in good hands and if the trailer is any indication, this film looks sure to be a magical continuation of its beloved predecessor.

The story appears to pick up twenty or so years after the original left off, with Jane and Michael banks now fully grown and played by British actors Emily Mortimer and Ben Whishaw respectively. Michael now has three children of his own and after the sad passing of his wife both he and Jane appear to have lost their way. Cue Mary Poppins for some much needed magical relief.

From the trailer, the film looks to be packed full of heart-warming references to the original, complete with hand-drawn cartoon characters and enchanting musical numbers. Marshall has not strayed far from the path laid down by the 1964 original, which in all honesty is a wise choice. No one asked for a complete reinvention of a childhood classic and thank God they are not giving us one.

Marshall enlisted various established actors for the film including Hollywood legends Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Angela Lansbury and even Dick Van Dyke of the original and finally we get to see them in action in the trailer. Lin-Manuel Miranda of Hamilton fame appears as a lamplighter in the film, in the equivalent of Dick Van Dyke’s character from the original.

The standout casting of course has to be Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins herself. Blunt remains an inspired choice and in the trailer she looks completely at home in shoes of the iconic character. She captures the stern poise and gentle warmth of Poppins perfectly and with Julie Andrews’ blessing we can all rest easy knowing our favourite nanny is in safe hands with Blunt.

Mary Poppins Return looks to be an uplifting and festive adventure, which is sure to be enjoyed by both children new to the story, and adults who will enjoy the film as a heart-warming journey of nostalgia.

Mary Poppins Returns will be released 21st December in the UK. Check out the trailer below!
