I dare you to watch this trailer all the way though and not have a tear in your eye and a lump in your throat by the end. Beautiful Boy tells the heart-breaking story of a father and son whose relationship is pushed to breaking point as a result of the destructive power of addiction. It follows David Sheff (played by Steve Carell), who is forced to watch helplessly as his son Nic (Timothée Chalamet) struggles with the downward spiral of meth addiction. The film is adapted from the real life memoirs of David Sheff and his son Nic, ‘Beautiful Boy: A Father’s Journey Through His Son’s Addiction’ and ‘Tweak: Growing up on Methamphetamines.’ Carell looks to be delivering a career best performance as the helpless father David, whose love for his son and desperate desire to help him in his recovery is rendered useless against the all-consuming nature of Nic's addiction. Chalamet, as always, seems to be on fine form as the young man fighting his demons and searching for the strength to find sobriety. The film will mark director, Felix Van Groeningen’s English language debut; his previous film The Broken Circle Breakdown (2012) was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards. From the trailer the film looks like a painfully honest portrayal of the devastating effect addiction can have on a family and if the film delivers on what the trailer has promised it is sure to be a favourite for the upcoming awards season. Check out some other films we're looking forward to that'll be screening at TIFF here. Beautiful Boy is set to release in UK cinemas on January 19 2019.
