There are two films coming out early next year that showcase female strength in the face of societal oppression, and here's are first look at both of them!
Colette, starring Keira Knightley, follows Gabrielle Colette (Knightley), a young woman in France who, after marrying Henry Gauthier-Villars (Dominic West) a Parisian 14 years her senior, is encouraged to write a series of novels published under his name.
Under the frustration of having to write more and more novels without receiving any of the acclaim and recognition she deserves, Collette looks to be pushing back against the boundaries of gender and propriety in early 20th century France.
Knightley looks on fine form as the tortured heroine of a period drama trapped within an unhappy marriage, a role she is well versed in, but a role she does incredibly well in nonetheless. Dominic West seems incredibly engaging as the charismatic but manipulative writer taking credit for his wife’s work. Think Christoph Waltz in Big Eyes, but with a bigger beard. Rounding out the cast is Denise Gough as non-gender conforming Mathilde de Morny and Eleanor Tomlinson (of Poldark fame) as fellow French society lady and potential love interest of Collette, Georgie Raoul-Duval.
The film looks to be a forward thinking take on female expression in the face of societal pressure to conform. It looks enthralling, engaging, and exactly what we need right now.
