There is nothing spookier than a haunted house. A creepy old mansion is a staple and has taken centre stage in many classic horror films.
The unnerving horror thriller Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built (2018) is based on true events surrounding the infamous Winchester house near San Francisco. The film will be available on Blu-Ray and DVD from Monday 28th May and to celebrate the release, we’ve put together a list of some of the best horror films set in a haunted house.
1. The Conjuring (2013)
Based on a true story, The Conjuring unveils the terrifying truths of the unfortunate Perron family who were terrorised by a dark spirit in their home in the 70s.
Following a brutal murder in the 1800s, the house is the setting for countless horrors. Paranormal investigators Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) and Ed (Patrick Wilson) arrive at the house to help the family, and encounter horror beyond belief.
If you haven’t seen this already, be prepared to spend most of the film peeking out from behind your fingers!
2. The Others (2001)
The Others is centered around Grace (Nicole Kidman) and her two children, who live in a creepy mansion in Jersey.
Grace is a weary mother who is eagerly waiting for her husband (Christopher Eccleston) to return from the Second World War, and is convinced that her home is plagued by spirits. Her children have a rare disease making them allergic to direct sunlight. This makes Grace even more on edge with her giving out strict instructions for curtains to be closed at all times; making the film even more intense!
This film leaves audiences on the edge of their seat. It’s a brilliant ghost story with many creepy moments and a cracking twist.
3. House on Haunted Hill (1999)
House on Haunted Hill stars the iconic Geoffrey Rush as multi-millionaire amusement park mogul, Stephen Price, who offers a group of strangers $1,000,000 each to stay in a creepy old mansion. Guests discover that the mansion was formerly a mental asylum with a very dark history and is home to very angry spirits.
The film is based on Agatha Christie’s classic novel, And Then There Were None, however be warned, there are definitely no quaint going ons here.
4. Poltergeist (1982)
Written by Steven Spielberg, Poltergeist pioneered the paranormal activity film genre and secured itself in the cult horror hall of fame in the eighties.
Unlike most haunted house horrors, this one is set in a seemingly normal looking house in US suburbia. However, it soon becomes apparent that the house is home to many ghosts who are on a mission to torment the Freelings’ family.
5. The Amityville Horror (1979)
This film must be the most infamous haunted house horror. Based on a true story, The Amityville Horror follows a family who move to the coast into a large house with a dark history. Despite warnings from the real estate agent, the family purchase the house and dismiss the claims saying “houses don’t have memories”… which is not true when it comes to this house!
