9 Things Hollywood actresses can do better than you

This year's Oscar nominations were released this week, and you might have noticed that the introductory clips were all of prominent actresses.

In the #TimesUp era, is this attempt at inclusivity worth applauding, or is it in fact trite, useless, and totally missing the point? That's for you to decide. It would undoubtedly be better for Hollywood to give these women better platforms to make powerful art rather than giving them 10 second clips then patting themselves on the back for their diversity quota being filled.

The Oscar nominations this year certainly aren't as diverse as last year, though Jordan Peele, Guillermo del Toro, and Greta Gerwig make some powerful statements.

Let's hope that these clips are a marker of change, rather than the weak platitude they come across as. Only time will tell! In the mean time, enjoy some flippant mockery intermingled with serious points about this year's nominations!

1. Gal Gadot can drink tea better than you. The real tea here is that Wonder Woman didn't get a single nomination from the Academy - not one for Patty Jenkins, or even for costuming or visual effects.

2. Priyanka Chopra can look good in any lighting better than you. It's a shame there aren't more South Asians given an opportunity in Hollywood... Kumail Nanjiani's Best Screenplay nomination for The Big Sick is a start, I guess.

3. Salma Hayek can rock literally any look better than you. It's phenomenal that Salma's fellow Mexican-American Guillermo del Toro's film The Shape of Water received 13 nominations!

4. Zoe Saldana can psych herself up to go on stage better than you. Zoe's film Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 received a nomination for best visual effects... it's a shame that Zoe's skin colour was all covered up with green though!

5. Fiona Shaw can save her own life better than you. This old-school skit reminds us that ageism for women in Hollywood still thrives. This year, however, 6/10 actresses nominated are over 50.

6. Rebel Wilson can have a great time better than you. Prejudice against plus-sized actresses is another issue that these nominations haven't done anything to address!

7. Michelle Rodriguez can express her rage better than you. Personally, I choose to interpret this outburst as a reaction to Dee Rees not being nominated as best director for Mudbound. Though Greta Gerwig's nomination for Lady Bird is a positive step for women in the industry, a woman of colour has never even received a nomination in this category, and Dee Rees truly deserved one this year.

8. Michelle Yeoh can be at peace better than you. This particular peace I'm sure is in response to Get Out's four nominations for Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor (Daniel Kaluuya), Best Director (Jordan Peele), and Best Picture. Only seeing the best film of the year get the recognition it deserves could bring such peace!

9. Rosario Dawson can age better than you. Yes, that's Rosario under there. This is a visual representation of how exhausting it is being a woman, especially a woman of colour, in 2018. Hollywood has a lot of issues to deal with, but so does the rest of the world. Let's see if we can't all do our bit to make it a better place!
