Ali Fazal talks playing real life characters, working with Judi Dench and his starring role in Victoria and Abdul

Ahead of the release of the incredible true story of the unlikely friendship between a Queen and an Indian prison clerk in Victoria and Abdul, The National Student sat down to talk to Ali Fazal about the film and his role.

Having already made a name for himself in Bollywood, as well as featuring in Fast and Furious 7, it surely won’t be long before Britain knows his name after this performance.

Playing the delightfully charming and optimistic Abdul in Stephen Frears’ new film, Ali Fazal brings an authentic wide-eyed quality to his character.

Speaking to Ali, The National Student discussed his first impressions of the story, the challenge of playing a real life character, the relevance of the film today and his experience of working with the beloved and incredible Judi Dench.
