With La La Land taking this years’ award season by storm, it proved its populatity with audiences this weekend by debuting in the UK box office at number one.

Taking an impressive £6.58million in its opening three days, La La Land knocked Fox’s Assassins Creed from first into fourth place, taking only £948,579.

This comes days after news that the musical featuring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling has been nominated for 11 BAFTA awards, including best film and best director.

This makes La La Land Lionsgate’s fourth biggest opening weekend ever, only surpassed by the three Hunger Games sequels: Catching Fire, Mockingjay - Part 1 and Mockingjay - Part 2.

Unsurprisingly, Lionsgate are happy with the way La La Land is performing. European CEO Zygi Kamasa sayts: “La La Land has touched audiences in a way that no one could see coming. We couldn’t be happier with what the film has delivered and how UK cinema-goers have responded."

The film has received rave reviews from across the globe and currently holds a rating of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average rating of 8.7 out of 10 from the likes of Empire and the Financial Times.

Meanwhile, the rest of the UK box office featured Disney’s Rogue One in second place, taking £1.76million, while Disney’s Moana and Sony’s Passengers took third and fifth place respectively.
