The first big ceremony of awards season has wrapped up, leaving us with plenty of funny and tear jerking moments to browse.

1) Emma Stone’s award for the dreamers

Starring in a film about a struggling actress, Emma Stone knows all too well about the reality of the entertainment industry.

As she accepted her award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, Stone’s speech was just touching as she emotionally thanked all of the special people in her life, including her parents and her brother. She reminded the audience that this is a film for dreamers, and that “hope and creativity are two of the most important things in the world”. She concluded by saying that anyone who had faced rejection, and struggling to keep moving towards their dream, shared the award with her.

2) Ryan Gosling’s speech dedicated to the memory of wife Eva Mendes’ brother

As Gosling took to the stage to accept his award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, he acknowledged that there were too many people to thank for their help. But he said that he wanted to make sure he thanked one person properly: his ‘lady’ Eva Mendes. He explained that while he was singing, dancing and having one of the best experiences he’s had on a film, she was “raising our daughter, pregnant with our second, and trying to help her brother fight his battle with cancer”. If she hadn’t taken all of that on, he explained, “it would surely be someone else up here”. He then dedicated the award to the memory of Mendes’ brother - a touching tribute from an talented actor.

3) Meryl Streep’s moving speech

In her speech for the Cecil B DeMille award, honouring her contribution to the entertainment world, Meryl did not waste a moment before speaking about the things that matter.

She spoke about “Hollywood, foreigners and the press”, and even took a moment to share her heartbreak over Donald Trump’s imitation of a disabled reporter. “Disrespect invites disrespect” she said, “violence incites violence”. She wrapped up by stressing the necessity of the honest press, who we need to “safeguard the truth”. Met by thunderous applause, the Hollywood legend made the biggest impact of the night.

4) Moonlight winning Best Picture

Perhaps the underdog of the awards. Despite Moonlight getting an incredible six Golden Globe nominations, it only came away with one win - but it was the biggest one of the night.

Moonlight is no doubt a far less mainstream watch than the rest of the Golden Globe nominees, but it shone through and won Best Picture Drama at the prestigious awards show.

It’s clear that even the cast and crew weren’t expecting this, and it’s just so moving to watch the genuine appreciation of producer Adele Romanski and writer/directed Barry Jenkins who asked that if you have seen the film, to “tell a friend, tell a friend, tell a friend”.

5) The Ryan Reynolds/Andrew Garfield Kiss

We just couldn’t help but sneak this one in. Not quite an acceptance speech, but a big moment nonetheless. Just when we thought that no one could beat Ryan Reynolds and Blake Livelys' power couple status, Reynold’s interest was elsewhere at last night’s Golden Globe awards.

As La La Land star Ryan Gosling was announced winner for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, Reynolds and The Amazing Spider-Man start Andrew Garfield leaned in to each other and shared a passionate kiss. Not a bad way to heal the wounds!
