Christopher Nolan explores uncharted territory in the first Dunkirk trailer

The first decent glimpse at Christopher Nolan’s huge, sprawling war movie Dunkirk is finally here and, well, it’s both huge and sprawling. What did you expect?
More than anything though, the trailer seems to show off much more of a departure from Nolan’s usual style, ditching the trademark Hollywood aesthetics of Interstellar and his Batman series for some stripped-back, highly classical photography, bringing him for the first time, closer to the likes of David Lean than Stanley Kubrick.
Telling the story of the infamous Dunkirk evacuation from World War II, that saw hundreds of thousands of British and Allied soldiers trapped on the beaches of France, surrounded by enemy forces, Nolan’s big-budget re-telling is taking things back into IMAX and 70mm special prints next year.
Crammed into the two minutes of seemingly random footage we get plenty of looks at the film’s battle sequences, nods to the main string of characters played by Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance, Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy, as well as a smattering of younger talent too.
And yes, Harry Styles is in there somewhere. You have to look a little harder since he’s not sporting the usual shaggy hair-do, but those feeling ultra-skeptical about his left-field casting can cool their engines for now; the former One Directioner makes up all of a split-second of footage and seems to blend in with his own soldier cohorts fairly well.
It’s not an awful lot to go on for now, but with Hoyte Van Hoytema’s gorgeous cinematography and Hans Zimmer’s rousing scoring skills returning alongside an original script from Nolan himself, it’s fair to say that Dunkirk is one of 2017’s most anticipated releases for sure.
Dunkirk is due to be released in the UK on 21st July 2017.
