Ben Affleck has been cast to play Batman in Man of Steel 2, causing some serious derision to be thrown in the direction of the film’s casting directors/a whole lot of twitter hand-ringing. Because the whole world is discussing Affleck’s merits, we decided to do some biographical stalking and find some facts that you might not previously have known* about the Golden Globe-winning director/husband of Jennifer Garner/sometimes good actor. (*Or maybe you already did know them. Never mind – here they are anyway...) 1. His middle name is ‘Geza’. As in, we presume, geezer. What a. 2. He met Matt Daaaaamon when he was eight years old – the latter lived just two blocks away, and is also his tenth cousin, once removed - allegedly. 3. His parents are a teacher and a social worker. 4. He made his directorial debut in 1993, with the imaginatively titled I Killed My Lesbian Wife, Hung Her On A Meat Hook, And Now I Have A Three-Picture Deal At Disney. Affleck has described the film as “haunting”, but we don’t think he meant it in a good, atmospheric way. Word on the street is it ain’t no Argo. 5. At college, his major was Middle Eastern Studies. Handy. 6. In 2001 Affleck decided that “a fuller life awaits without alcohol.” 7. In 2003 he was engaged to Jennifer Lopez. Odd couple? We think so. They were popularly known as ‘Bennifer.” And then they split up. Celeb magazines were sad for a brief amount of time... 8. But not for long, because pretty soon he married Daredevil co-star Jennifer Garner, they had a number of fairly adorable children (Violet, Seraphina and Samuel, to date), and no one ever called them Bennifer. Harmony restored. 9. Argo won the 2012 Academy Award for Best Picture, and was nominated in six other categories – but not, controversially, Best Director. 10. He’s quite good at accents.
