Christmas party season is almost upon us and the dress pressure is already sky-high: what colour? Style? Do I go for glitter? Crushed velvet? Do I want to go mini? Maxi? Midi?

But despite what the invite says, you know, you really don’t have to wear a dress. There are plenty of great alternatives out there which are just as festive and just as glamorous.

What about a trusty co-ord, or a chic skirt and shirt combo? This year, it’s time to forget the pressure and forgo the dress.

The co-ord
A truly effortless choice. Whether you choose a bold co-ord or go for a simple, yet effective, muted choice, this look is the perfect alternative to a party dress.

This pink Missguided co-ord is a great pick for the festive season. Light and understatement, this piece is easily dressed up with some rose gold jewellery and simple heeled sandals.

Alternatively, a glitter or metallic-based co-ord adds a little Christmas glamour to your alternative choice of party-wear. And for only £18.00, this gorgeous metallic ruched skirt would be sure to make a statement for all the right reasons.

Or, if you're really feeling the sparkle, why not opt for this twinkling gold cami and skirt set, to see yourself shining as bright as the Christmas tree.

The bottom half

A leather-look skirt never truly goes out of fashion, but the wardrobe staple is enjoying a particular resurgence lately.

If in doubt, go for black: it’ll match everything and is easy to dress-up with jewellery. This biker style mini from River Island will look perfect with a bold top. Why not go for red or green to really keep in with the festive theme, with a little silver jewellery for added sparkle.

Granted, shorts can be hard to pull off in the evening. But, with a pair of towering heels and the right top, they can be perfect for a Christmas party look.

These Letina black pearl shorts from In The Style have a wrap-front detail that adds the femininity of a skirt with the androgynous chic of shorts. A long-sleeved crop and statement earrings will make this the perfect alternative to a party dress!

Flared trousers haven’t been truly cool since the 70’s, so we think it’s high time we started to utilise this trend! Plain black is the safest option, and these Club L jersey trousers with chic ruffle hem detail are perfect for dressing up with a glittery camisole for a festive look.

The blazer
Not usually known for being a party staple, the trusty blazer can be a great way of giving your look a Christmas spin.

With a plain top (a simple camisole will work great) and simple skirt, shorts or trousers, all you’ll need is a statement blazer to be the party’s resident fashionista.

This sequined tailored blazer from Boohoo is £35.00 and comes in three different colours. Perfect for stepping up the glam at your Xmas celebrations!

The shoes
Let's face it. If you choose the perfect statement shoe, the outfit hardly matters.

To channel your inner Cinderella, choose a bejewelled pair like these strappy rose gold sandals from Ikrush. No-one is going to be paying attention to your all-black look when you've got those diamonds on your toes!

Sock boots are the trend that everyone’s talking about, with Kim Kardashian loyally plugging the look all year long, so why not try the wine sock boot by Pretty Little Thing to spice up your festive style.

Or, for a fun spin on traditional Christmas red, these statement floral heels from Boohoo are an absolute festive steal, at just £28.00 and are guaranteed to lift even the most mundane of outfits with a blast of colour.
