How to tackle dry skin in the winter months

Ok, so we may as well face facts: summer has officially left us. As per usual, the sun just about appeared, and now has us facing the consequences of winter: bitter temperatures, lack of vitamin D and my old favourite, dehydration.

“How do I conquer this if I already have dry skin?” you may ask yourself.

As a chronic sufferer of dry skin, I used to fear the encroaching winter like you might fear the ghouls wandering the streets this Halloween. But now, with just a few simple steps, I've found a way not only to keep my dry skin at bay, but to keep it feeling silky smooth all the way through winter.

Follow this simple skincare routine to keep your skin feeling nourished throughout the winter months:

Treat yourself to a double cleanse

Foaming cleansers are great at tackling our summer problems, removing your makeup with ease and make you look squeaky-clean. However, a second cleanser is necessary when it comes to tackling dry skin in the winter months, as it ensures that you meet all of your skincare needs.

A wonderful cleanser to remove your makeup is Kiehl’s ‘Midnight Recovery Botanical Cleansing Oil’ (£32):

Midnight Recovery

This product is oil-based and enriched with Omega-6 Fatty Omega’s, which means your skin will be left with an improved complexion and a soft texture. They work to boost the moisture in the skin’s cells and are thought to reduce dryness by 28%.

To make this combo unbeatable, Gallinee’s ‘La Culture Foaming Facial Cleanser’ (£13.90) is the perfect foaming cleanser to cleanse your recently make-up relieved skin:

Cleansing your skin twice allows your serums and moisturizers to work to their full potential, meaning that you will achieve the best results and get the most for your money.

However, if two cleansers is too high maintenance for your student budget, then just cleansing your face twice with the same cleanser will work too.

Change your moisturiser

Hydration is the absolute key to success when it comes to tackling dry skin, particularly in the winter months. By keeping your skin hydrated, you will maintain plumpness and a healthy glow.

The Body Shop’s ‘Vitamin E Aqua Boost Sorbet’ (£14) is a dream moisturiser for dry skin:

This product drenches your skin with hydration whilst providing a matte finish, which means you can get all the benefits of shine-free skin whilst keeping it nourished.

Try adding oil into your routine

This may sound daunting, but incorporating a facial oil into your routine will make your skin feel like a dream. Use after cleansing your face and before applying moisturiser, or otherwise mix into your cleanser.

One that I cannot recommend enough is Manuka Doctor’s ‘24K Gold & Manuka Honey Face Oil’ (£15.99):

For all the Kardashian fans out there, you have probably seen this splashed over Kourtney's Snapchat and Instagram stories.

However, even if you don't follow her... who would possibly turn down the chance to say that your face is fashioning 24K gold?

Exfoliate away

By exfoliating your skin you are ensuring that all impurities are scrubbed away and that dullness is a thing of the past. It is recommended that you use this twice a week, as over exfoliation can have a worse effect on dry skin than not exfoliation at all.

A great product for dry skin is Neutrogena’s ‘Hydro Boost Exfoliator Smoothing Gel’ (£7.99):

This product refines and polishes your skin with the use of naturally sourced microbeads and like some of the other products I have mentioned, this also includes Hyaluronic Acid (do you see a theme here?). For under a tenner, this product is definitely worth the investment.

Use a facemask

Go on… a facemask is basically the closest thing you can get to a spa treatment, right?

This kind of treatment is perfect for the days where your skin could do with some extra TLC, whilst you hide from your housemates in your room and watch endless episodes of Gossip Girl (guilty!)

My favourite facemask at the moment is by STARSKIN, ‘Silkmud Green Tea Clay Anti-ageing Liftaway Mud Face Sheet Mask’ (£8.50):

The impressive thing about this mask is that it is pumped with ingredients that will fix any skin dilemma. The real star of the show is Hydrolyzed Collagen, which will hydrate dry and damaged skin and its co-star Green Tea Powder which will work on protecting the skin and preventing ageing

Get yourself an eye cream

As if dry skin is bad enough – dry eyes/eyelids are the true miracles of Christmas. To make ensure that you can rock that eye-look that you've been practicing for Christmas parties, a moisturised eye is kind-of essential.

To prevent this from happening, Nip + Fab have their ‘No Needle Fix Eye Cream’ (£14.95) to make your Christmas wishes come true:

Thanks to a wonderful 3-in-1 formula, this eye cream will target puffiness, flakiness and your dark circles! This will cure any dryness around the area, as well as brightening it up. There won't be a dry eye in the house...

The finishing touches

Just to ensure that you are completely moisturised, why not pay attention to your lips? They are easily targeted in the cold weather and they deserve as much attention as the rest of your face.

Thanks to the wonder that is Glossier, we have ‘the Original Balm Dotcom’ (£25) that will nourish your lips:

So, I understand that £25 seems pretty steep for a lip balm. But, fear not - this £25 entitles you to three! This means you get to choose your daily flavour from Birthday Balm, Mint, Cherry, Coconut, Rose and the Original.

Now, go and make sure that your skin is glowing like the star of Bethlehem.
