After a year of high-profile fashion and television appearances and a spot on US Glamour's Women of the Year list, the body-positive activist and model Ashley Graham now has her own Barbie.
In an Instagram post, Graham describes the Barbie as an 'honor', using the powerful hashtag #beautybeyondsize.
Graham has been a passionate voice in the fashion industry, promoting more diversity and inclusivity. By celebrating her curves, whilst openly acknowledging the self-doubt she suffered growing up, she has been urging girls and women to love themselves and their bodies.
With touching thighs, beauty marks and full eyebrows, the Barbie captures distinctive elements of Graham’s look. The doll’s outfit is based on one of Graham’s NYFW looks, reflecting her style and confidence with an eye-catching sparkly dress.
Having helped Mattel to design the curvy Barbie, Graham was presented with her doll at Glamour’s Women of the Year Summit yesterday in Los Angeles.
Graham’s doll follows Mattel's recent introduction of different skin tones and sizes to their range of Barbies. Rather than the typically blonde-haired and very slim Barbie dolls that we are used to seeing, Graham's curvy Barbie with wavy brown hair is refreshing.
After much criticism that Barbies have presented a too-narrow definition of beauty for too long, Graham’s Barbie is another important step for the doll's body-images.
Mattel celebrate Ashley Graham and her body-positive messages with the Barbie doll, encouraging more people to recognise that there is beauty in diversity and #beautybeyondsize.
