Winter is well and truly on the way so, if you haven’t already, it’s time to start embracing the best trends seen on the AW13 catwalk earlier this year.  Not sure what the key looks are for this season, or perhaps you’re undecided as to which trends you want to try out? Luckily, fashion icon Whitney Port has given us her exclusive tips on how to shop for AW13 key pieces on a student-friendly budget! Check out her favourite fashion fixes for the months ahead:

1. It’s a good idea to invest in an autumn/winter coat as it’s a key piece you’ll wear all season.  Pink is the colour this winter ranging from pale, dusky shades to bright candy bubblegum hues. The high street is your best route for reasonable priced jackets.

2. To instantly update your look without spending too much money shop for on trend accessories rather than specific items of clothing. Tartan is a stand out print for autumn/winter so make a statement with small pieces such as belts, collars and scarves.

3. Winter florals were a big hit on the catwalks. Check out local vintage and charity stores for some of the most unique buys. Floral prints have been around for decades, so you’ll definitely be able to find some hidden, perhaps extravagant gems.

4. Borrow your boyfriend’s suit jacket. Masculine tailoring is back. Pair oversized outerwear with brogues and fitted trousers for a cool, androgynous look.

5. Choose an on trend item that can be styled several different ways. A block coloured dress is a great example, as it’s  easy to vamp up with a pair of heels and super smooth pins (thanks to my fave beauty tool, the new Venus & Olay razor), or dress down with flats and edgy accessories.

6. Set a budget and a make a list. I’m forever pinning items to my Pinterest board and it’s a great way to pull together ideas about what pieces you really want to buy. That way, when you go shopping you’re not going in blind and won’t make any unnecessary purchases.

7. Leather is always a classic material for autumn/winter as it feeds into the vamp and punk trends that are prominent at the moment. Again, check out your local vintage or charity shops to bag a bargain!

8. Invite all your friends over one evening and host a ‘swap shop’. This is a really fun way to update your wardrobe without spending any money! Each person has to bring items that are around the same value and you can agree on how long the items can be swapped for.

9. Don’t forget that you can also update your look with make-up. Crimson tones are the ultimate shade this autumn/winter and you’ll be following in the footsteps of fashion royalty by working this trend!

10. Finally, remember that you don’t have to update your winter wardrobe all in one go. The January sales are a great time to pick up some bargains and they’ll last you right up until March.
