Netflix has recently announced its major new project, which intends to bring together comedians from all over the world for a series of global comedy specials.

The project is said to feature 47 comedians each delivering a half hour special in a variety of languages, including French, English, Portuguese, Spanish, Arabic, Dutch and German. The comedy specials, of which the majority which will be taped at the ‘Just for Laughs’ festival in Montreal later this month, are then set to be released on Netflix all at once in what is being described as a ‘ground-breaking event series.’

Other filming is said to be taking place in Sao Paulo, Amsterdam, Berlin, Mumbai and Mexico City.

Lisa Nishimura, vice president of original documentary and comedy at Netflix said, ‘Few things are better than discovering a new comedian you love. With this event, we’re creating a true comedy festival experience for our members where they can scour the globe from home to find some of the freshest voices in comedy.’

The comics representing the UK in the comedy event are Ellie Taylor and Nish Kumar, who have worked together on the satirical comedy show The Mash Report, as well as Joel Dommett of I’m a Celebrity Get me Out of Herefame and Mae Martin.

With Netflix investing so heavily into original content at the moment, having announced an intention to spend $12-13 billion on its programming this year (a large increase from 2017’s $8 billion) some are concerned that the sheer amount of original film and TV means that a great deal is bound to fall through the cracks and as a result cancellations will be on the rise.

However, if the Emmy nominations are anything to go by (this year was the first year Netflix has overtaken HBO in nominations, beating them 112 to 108), Netflix’s success will not be coming to an end any time soon. And as such, we can expect much more original content like this in the coming year.

No official release date for the comedy special event has been announced yet but it is expected to be available next year.
