Kamitan Arts will present Poetry 4 Grenfell'S One-Year-on Show on Saturday 14 July at Bush Theatre. The show will give a platform to the voices in the Royal Borough of Kensingtion and Chelsea in the wake of the Grenfell fire. On 14 June 2017, a fire broke-out in the 24-storey Grenfell tower block of public housing flats in North Kensington, West London. The fire rapidly spread across the bullding and burned for 60 hours. Out of th 263 poeple in the building, 72 people died. The Poetry 4 Grenfell project was created immediately to help individuals deal with the emotional aftermath of the Grenfell fire of June 2017 through art. The project is led by Kamitan Arts, a Non-Profit Artisitc Community Company that has been volunteering in the area since immediately after the fire and have offered rap-poetry worksops to those who were affected by the tragedy. The workshops help individuals express themselves as well as address their emotions and begin to heal through therapeutic writing. The initial poetry workshops inspired a call out for pieces to create the Poetry 4 Grenfell bilingual book a year ago. Kamitan Arts are still crowdfunding to help publish the book in time for the 14 July show and to give free copies to Grenfell suriviors and families. The company was inspired to document the local voices and testimonies from the diverse community. During this period, the group was filmed. Directed by Emmanuelle Marcel 'Ja'bbour the short film named Poetry 4 Grenfell won Best Art Film at Portobello Film Festival in 2017. There was no funding for equipment during filming and most of those involved were children, young people, and elders from the Ladbroke Grove and Latimer Road community. The film will be screened at the One-Year-On show.
Guest artists at the event on 14 July include: Charlotte Kelly from Soul II Soul, Alexander D Great, and Pan Diva, as well as many more.
