Youth culture magazine Dazed, along with Huawei and artist Campbell Addy, are looking for young people to enter their new competition, ‘Reveal the Real You.’
They are inviting young UK creatives to submit photography, with the aim of capturing forgotten and unheard stories in local communities. Three applicants will be given £10,000 to donate to a charity of their choice and one will be given an outdoor “living gallery” space, in order to display their work to the public.
With the campaign’s focus on youth culture, organizers are looking to unlock the potential of future talent and celebrate individuals who view the world differently. Dazed said: “This is a call to action: we want to give you a way to celebrate, document and ultimately give back to the communities, causes, and ideologies that have shaped you.”
Potential applicants need to share a few words about the community they're shooting and provide five images from their photography portfolio. Successful candidates will be shortlisted in a group of 20, who will be given a Huawei P10 smartphone to investigate their subject further. The shortlist will then be reduced to three winners, who will be given £10,000 each to donate to a community project of their choice; just one of these three winners will be rewarded with an outdoor gallery space.
Campbell Addy selected ten of his portraits to kickstart the campaign. As a Peckham local, he chose to investigate the more diverse tenets of his community, shining a light on young people of
He said: “I want to shine a light on the artists of South London, breaking down the expected view of artists as the privileged middle class. I am championing the people of Peckham who are ‘doing the most with the least.” You can view his work until the 23rd of September.
Dazed have provided a few suggestions detailing the kinds of communities that they want you to explore. These include stories of local groups such as sports teams doing positive work in communities to tackle diversity, vibrant and energetic images of admirable role models in your area, or clubs and initiatives that could really benefit from £10,000 of funding.
